Black bins across Hull will soon be fitted with orange tags.
The tags will be placed on bins from Tuesday 10 March to remind residents that food waste should be placed in the brown bin.
It follows a study that found 26 per cent of household rubbish in black bins is food waste.
Doug Sharp, head of waste management at Hull City Council, said: “By placing tags on bins we are asking residents to put their food waste in the brown bin.
“We are the top performing unitary city council in the country for recycling, but we could be even better if more food waste was recycled.”
Black bin waste is sent to an energy from waste facility, which costs twice as much and does not have the same environmental benefits as composting food waste at the council’s organic waste facility.
The orange tags will be fitted from Tuesday 10 March.
Doug said: “To thank residents for their continued support, we aim to organise a free compost giveaway during spring time.”
